Patching Statistics - Scan Column

Hi,

We're trying to figure out the best way to know what percentage of vulnerabilities are left to be patched.

I thought I would add the Scan column and the Detected column and then divide Total Scans by Total Detecteds.

It was my understanding that the Scan column contained the total amount of devices that "could be vulnerable".  For example I may have 1000 machines, but 100 of them are servers.  If a patch only affected servers, (and assuming that all of the 1000 machines reported), I would expect to see 100 in the Scan column.  That was my understanding.

So, I was surprised to see that the latest patch for Firefox has hundreds of devices are listed, although only 100 or so machines actually have Firefox on it.

What is that scan column really telling me?

If it's based on OS, then all the numbers should be the same as we have Win XP and Serv 2003.  But I have a whole bunch of different numbers per each

This issue has been DOGGING me for almost 2 years and I haven't gotten an answer that matches what I have found....

Thanks,

Scott.....
